Scarce and loved

Walnut burls are scarce. Walnuts are not as prone to this type of growth as are maples, willows, sycamore and oaks.

This piece is from the stump of a large tree blown down in a hurricane that passed through New Jersey in the early 1980s. The rest of the tree was sold for commercial timber. Stump woods and burl woods are darker in color and more highly figured than the straight grain of the trunk. They are also of very little commercial value and usually left behind for artists like myself who love what no one else does.
