I found the cherry burl from which I turned, then sculpted this piece on a waste pile of a logging project near Boone, NC.
That same pile gifted me with a hunk of wormy cherry burl from which I turned a sister pieced that I named Pagoda.
As in most of my work, the shape of the “blank” and the character or features of the wood significantly dictated the final form. For this piece, the form with all its distress reminded me of an ancient Greco-Roman vessel and inspired the name.
