Harry Pollitt

A self taught sculptor of curves, voids and the unusual. A lover of all things wood and then in 2009 a "cross-over" to the luminosity and color palette of cast glass sculpture using the lost wax process.

SOFA Chicago 2009

An unexpected encounter at SOFA Chicago 2009 ultimately leads to my cross-over from wood art to sculptural glass On Saturday night in Chicago, a glass collector “crossed over” and purchased his first wood sculpture. I’m honored that my cedar sculpture, First Born, was his choice. A very unexpected outcome was that within two months, I, […]

Morph XI

Morph XI embodies my favorite sweeps and sensuous curves, but it also displays a rather dramatic and extremely stylized human form. In the process, it violates the traditional “Golden Thirds” rule. But my roguish nature likes breaking rules.

Oceania, undulating, maple burl sculpture from bark-edge Maple by Harry Pollitt

Oceania

Oceania: The creative process for this turned and sculpted piece was, not surprisingly, multi-stepped. I began by turning the rough exterior contour on a lathe and then drilling a 1 ¼” diameter hole into the top center.

SOFA WEST Santa Fe 2009

This year’s events will include not only SOFA CHICAGO 2009 in early November, but we’ve just participated in a new SOFA venue premiering in my own home town of Santa Fe in June. What an incredible honor to be included among the finest artists, chosen by leading galleries in the world, for these prestigious, quintessential

Charybdis

My first glimpse of what would become Charybdis was a tree twisted unlike any I had ever seen. I figured its contorted mass resulted from a tornado strike when it was just a sapling. It sported double back curves that are my stock in trade, and I very badly wanted to sculpt into it for its color and grain features.

Trapeze

Trapeze : Designing Trapeze was as much presenting Nature’s inherent beauty as it was my melding with it. Hanging as a wall sculpture, the piece is oriented as the trees stood, lower trunk at bottom, upper limbs spreading at top.

Morph VII

Slender, open front curl and up-swept spire makes a real statement for the size of this Black Cherry wood sculpture. I borrowed some lines from two previous sculptures in the Morph Series…but since it’s my work, I do not feel guilty of plagiarism. You decide.
