Harry Pollitt

A self taught sculptor of curves, voids and the unusual. A lover of all things wood and then in 2009 a "cross-over" to the luminosity and color palette of cast glass sculpture using the lost wax process.

Midnight Moves

Midnight Moves: The most difficult sculptural glass I’ve completed to date. And the most difficult to cast. And yet, the degree of difficulty plays an integral role in the moodiness and depth created by the dark orange red glass.

Midnight Moves | 1′-7″ h, 10″ diameter | Kiln cast crystal | Dark Orange Red | SOLD to Private Collector.

Harry Pollitt - jade green Pinnacle glass sculpture

Pinnacle

Lots of descriptors fit my newest cast glass sculpture…cantilevered, precarious, a challenge, jade green. What it cannot call itself is “meant to be.” But six re-builds later, I call it pretty cool. Engineering disguised as aesthetics. And not easy to capture, so I’ll post a few extra photos shortly. Let me know what you think.

Harry Pollitt - cobalt blue Coriolis glass sculpture

Coriolis

In the emerging stages, my first cast glass wall sculpture was a whole new process for me. In wood, a wall sculpture is a familiar and enjoyable form. Yet, at first, it felt “weird” in wax. I had to become acclimated all over again to designing without the wood grain. There seemed now to be no point of beginning.

SOFA 2014 Pollitt sculptures

Opening night tonight, November 6, and for the next three days, the Thomas Riley Galleries will exhibit five of my sculptures, 4 in cast glass and 1 in wood – Enigma, Midnight Moves, Red Shift, Ode to Morph, and Morph VI in black cherry wood. This is the 9th consecutive year my work has been represented at SOFA and the second time my two styles of sculpture will be exhibited in the same year.

Harry Pollitt - cobalt blue Enigma glass sculpture

Enigma

Some months back, I stumbled upon a long forgotten, unfinished wood sculpture. I had abandoned it because I had excavated it so much that I could not execute my intended design. The dangers of reduction art! Now, I’ve given it another try – this time converting the sculptural concept in wood to a glass sculpture.

Limoncelli

Limoncelli: This is the first time I used the color called Citrine (a color not likely found on my personal palette), but I am delighted with the outcome. It shimmers in the light and delivers one of the true rewards for working in glass – the added dynamic of color and luminosity.

Limoncelli | 10″ diameter | Kiln cast crystal | Citrine | SOLD by Thomas Riley Galleries.

Harry Pollitt - Sentinel glass sculpture

Sentinel

I’m continually inspired by re-thinking (and thus always eager to try variations of) my own work. My #27 kiln-cast piece is an open design glass sculpture influenced by previous pieces — and by #26, which had failed at the foundry. Come take a look at the final result as well as a few progress photos.
